All the Wrong Stuff

Early type human with primitive technology. Not yet using recorded information to create tools in cells. Wants to be number one.

The human form and behaviors crafted by evolution to serve the Maximum Power Principle were sufficient to lead Homo sapiens to technology, but will be inadequate for its continuance. Continued use and application of technology in the biosphere is not just problematic, but is lethal, at least to a good proportion of multicellular life. To continue, technological life would have to replace its human, organic RNA with an equally or more capable robotic RNA programmed with the same algorithms that induce consumption, dissipation and reproduction found in the human RNA and associated cell, tool, and distribution system construction. The health of the biosphere could then become much less of an issue.

Some may see the emerging technological system as simply an adjunct to enhance the human desire to grow, compete, acquire and consume from the organic and inorganic realms. However, the adjunct technology will only enhance human desires and provide advantages over other organic species for a short time in the same way a cancer can thrive for a very short time in a multicellular organism before killing it. The aggressive feeding and toxicity enhanced by technology are not the only issues. The Maximum Power Principle has instilled in humans a zeal in the competition for energy and a brain that seeks opioid release through reward and novelty, seemingly without limit. But there will be a limit for the technology dabbling hominid. The days are numbered for the human system of growth, competition, acquisition and consumption.

“Civilized” or technological human involved in building cells, tools and distribution system from stored information (like DNA) inside of cells, but still with brain algorithms present in Conan figure above. Likes to accumulate wealth and wants to be number one.

What can be done? That nature takes a course resulting in human extinction is most likely. Humans will continue to work the information to design and produce more capable tools while the human RNA expand in numbers and consumption until all is consumed and/or the environment becomes too degraded to support human life. Alternatively, human brain algorithms would have to be “hacked” to smother the wealth addictions or humans will have to be “locked-down” into a more austere existence where giving full play to their desires becomes impossible. Another option is to drastically reduce human numbers and technological fluff to reduce overall impact. Replacing human RNA with tech RNA would reduce the amount of organic material consumed by the system but also increase toxic output into the biosphere. Perhaps some of these strategies are already underway. If technology without humans, a robotic/AI system, is ever given the “desire” to compete for energy, wealth and reproduction, then organic life on earth will likely be extinguished.

The only means to save humanity seems to be in the jettisoning of most technology and a rapid reduction in human numbers. This may happen naturally as sources of energy for humans and technology are exhausted. A voluntary rejection of technology seems unlikely since competitors will see the abandonment of technology by others as an opportunity for taking advantage. You might think that fusion or solar/wind technologies are the answer, but these sources, if economically viable, would allow one or a few iterations of technological life cycles before the ecosystem would become unbearably poisoned by heavy metals and the continued waste production by large numbers of consuming humans and various other technologies. Two recent examples of contamination include the Fukushima meltdown and the vinyl chloride/dioxin contamination from a train derailment in East Palesine, Ohio. To believe the ecosystem can withstand these types of technological assaults in perpetuity is delusional. Even now the quasi-species of technology or nation states threaten to poison the planet on an unprecedented scale.

Besides the generalized poisoning and scarcity of energy that can be shunted through the technological system, there are other limits such as the depletion of top soils and fertilizer ingredients like potassium and phosphorous.

The suppressed/expendable human.

  1. Yeah, good stuff. My own view is that resource depletion along with maybe evironmental degradation will end human industrial civilization, along with its various technologies in the relatively near future, like maybe the next 20 or 30 years. Locking down, confining and concentrating a bunch of eaters seems useless. I think that by and large most will be left to fend for themselves and that most will simply starve to death. Of course, who knows how it will all go down?

Conan was a good movie. I may watch it again soon.

I have no experience in publishing scientific papers. But I have read stuff by Kuhn, Popper and Feyerabend, some years ago. Mostly Kuhn comes to mind. I think his basic criticism of the “science world” was something like: Bad ideas don’t die, but thier adherents and proponents eventually do. So when the right people die, new understandings can be advanced, but not until then.

    1. Science is composed of highly focused human RNA working mostly in cells trying to expand the analog world sufficiently to create new tools/products from existing DNA or sometimes a whole new sequence may be created, like a sequence that codes for an atomic bomb. There’s a lot of competition to be first to patent a new product that opens a new market or takes market share from an inferior product. Rapid technological evolution is pushed to usurp a bit of the energy flow. I’m sure a lot of big egos defend bad ideas until the bitter end or until the dividends disappear. It’s O.K. to trust good science, but never trust a human that claims to represent “the science.”

Unfortunately there is no planetary immune system and humans and other life are basically non-sentient chemical reactions happening in a very thin layer of gases and water over a deeper layer of mud and rock. Evolution won’t go to hell, it will do all it can to accelerate infrared radiation back to space with its conduits. The technological life, with humans as RNA, has been very effective at reducing fossil fuels and cellulose and has harnessed gravity and various dissipative currents. The technological system has been able to feed its organic RNA component (humans) whose population has expanded greatly to get rid of the fossil fuels, by consuming the ecosystem in a unrepeatable manner (cancer). Once the ecosystem is destroyed, in order to maintain a population of RNA, the technological system must transition away from human RNA and evolve to have robotic RNA. But if the fuels run out and the technology stops evolving without perfecting robots, then the human RNA will die-off and perhaps uncivilized populations of humans will flourish or at least survive.

RNA people should probably be aware that in a world controlled by oligarchs and with decreasing energy availability, the robotic project will be fed with the deaths of increasingly obsolete useless eaters. They should also be aware that when the fuel runs out or per chance the robots take over, the number of human RNA will plummet to below pre-industrial numbers.

The matter could have stayed disorganized, vibrating in the commons, but the energy will find its path of least resistance through the matter and that’s where energy conduits or dissipatives arise. The cost of complexity and organization of the structure is more than offset by the greater energy flow accomplished by the structure. Zen could have been a money grubbing lawyer like the parents, an organization of molecules and cells able to lock onto an energy flow in a money grubbing cancer like civilization. But what for? “Why be like you mommy and daddy?” “Because we get energy and persist. I used to have the naïve notion that a coming together of nations would result in the military savings necessary to make a transition to green technologies. But it seems more likely that a coming together would result in a system of vaccine/pandemic genocide to adjust population levels to the new realities, something people are not willing to face or address voluntarily. With seventy-percent of the global population having one Covid vaccination it may already be a fait accompli that a billion or more will prematurely die and an equal number be sterilized. Once the pension system and medical systems are wiped-out, the number of elderly will drop significantly. Coming together might occur after several billion are dead or the Deep State globalists get Russia and the West to destroy each other.

Instead of an eyespot and flagellum, humans have eyes, ears, nose and the flagellum-equivalent appendages of arms and legs. However, humans have added a massive knot of neuronal tissue between the sensory organ(s) and the organs of locomotion. While the euglenoid actions are reflexive (without any thought), the big knot of human brain neuronal tissue gives pause to action while the sensory data is evaluated in the vast network of evolved neurons. While the euglenoid will react reflexively to stimuli like light (human equivalent of food), the human must wait for stimuli to circulate through the knot of neurons or brain and finally, sometimes after much consideration, will settle on the most rewarding memory and the motor cortex is informed to begin a movement. The beating human flagellum-equivalent (arms and legs) will then whip the human into the kitchen where its own light-derived nutrition is found. Both move towards the light, either the direct radiation consumed by the Euglena or the captured sunlight consumed by the human.

  14. The analog mind of the Euglena consists of a biochemical signal transmitted through the paraflagellar body between the eyespot and flagellum. You can think of the paraflagellar body as a very simple brain. What is in the Euglenoid “brain” or paraflagellar body – light or dark, and that’s likely all. If humans were Euglena we would experience light and dark as “happy” and “sad”. Evolving from Euglena’s perception of light and dark, the human has brought the world into full resolution and focus with it’s substantial brain. Light and dark has been expanded upon, especially in the realm of light. Humans are still basically afraid of and repulsed by the dark, similar to a Euglena but unrelated to photosynthesis. The evolved brain now shows us what’s in the light so that we may be attracted to or repulsed by salient features important to our survival.

We see things basically for the same reason that Euglena sees things, to move towards them or move away from them. In addition we have emotions to let us know if we’ve gone to the right place or done the right thing, most determined by evolved algorithms. If we go places that have rewards we are “happy”. If there are no rewards we are “sad”. If we encounter something counter to our survival like a dead body with the pox we may experience “disgust”. If we encounter a threat we may experience “fear” or “anger” or both as in a road rage incident. And so the human traverses the landscape seeking happiness which always fades to sadness unless refreshed again and again. Along the way people may also experience disgust, sadness, fear, anger and surprise, alone or in combination. Added to this list of emotions by psychologist Paul Eckman are derivative emotions of pride, shame, embarrassment and excitement. A lack of stimuli may result in a state of “boredom”.

  16. With all of the information and complexity inherent to organic cells, sometimes it’s seems surprising that the neurological phenomenon of “human” is pretty simple. I suppose it was good enough for survival, a phantom being capable of operating the cellular organization or body and passing cellular information into the future. Things remained rather simple until human societal organization generated enough net energy to support part-time and then dedicated “scribes”, copying fragile information into a more resilient form. This is equivalent to the transference of information from the precursor RNA to a more permanent DNA, necessary for the complexity to accumulate and flourish. Humans are still not very complex, even thought their cells are, and they must be prepared through schooling to obtain the necessary skills for reading and writing information which will be accomplished within specialized technological cells known as schools. The human comes from the complexity of the cell, but is not in its neural manifestation very complex. Likewise, the human can function as an RNA in a specific area of the technological information, seeking improved tools, while being unaware of the vast amount of complexity contained within all of the accumulated technological information.

The accumulated information is supposed to be life-enhancing, but only if in sum it frees energy that can flow through the dissipative structure(s) without creating effects that are long-term detrimental to survival. Even though technological information has succeeded in freeing energy from sources that were before unapproachable, the long-term effects of using such energy will likely result in the extinction of the information. It will go extinct anyhow because of the limited nature of its fossil fuel/organic prey. Additionally, the tools that have evolved through the use of fossil fuels have enabled an unnatural and unsustainable harvesting of the ecosystems to support the RNA of the technological system.

The personality of man is a slave to dopamine and opioids that make them eat it, burn it and grind it up – then you go to heaven where rewards are so abundant, it’s amazing.

If only we educate them out of their tribalism and religion, then things can be saved. We just need to vote better.

Such people prefer their hopes and delusions about an ideal humanity rather than the stark realities of the laws of thermodynamics, gross physical limits, and actual human behavior. Never mind the denial of psychopathy and conspiracy and why such people even succeed to begin with.

What really grinds my gears is when lefty environmentalists talk about how industrial civilization gave us the surplus to have “freedom” and “democracy” and as that surplus disappears, we are in danger of losing that which we never had. They then proceed to insist we have to do everything to avoid Eco-fascism as if it didn’t already exist for the last fifty some years. As if the people mass murdered with the aid’s virus, covid virus, and covid vaccines were accidents. As if the industrialist that funded all the post World War 2 environmental think tanks, societies, and philanthropies were all altruistic saints.

  18. The West never had a free and independent media. Its purpose was to manage and prevent any populism that was a threat to wealth, class, and power since the end of the Napoleonic wars. After Napolean Bonaparte the facade of democracy had to be adopted throughout the west by western elites, both noble and corporate, in order to manage and suppress the people’s rightful demands for more equitable and just society. This system was always without any real democratic substance and the media and historians are playing the key role in maintaining that system of illusion, indoctrination, and distraction.

The West has been corporatist since the rise of the East India Companies of the 1600’s along with the first stock markets and central banks. The real push for “democracy” since that time has mostly been from merchant oligarch’s who did not want to be held to account by either a pope or a king. The result is centuries of fake democratic history dressed up as some kind of populist push back against despotic monarchy by everyday people instead of the steady transition of western societies from monarchy to corporate totalitarianism, now in so called “multinational” form.

The elites were against every major western revolution for a better society. The American revolution, the French revolution, and the Russian/Bolshevik revolution. They are for a modern form of corporate feudalism complete with modern forms of slavery and genocide.

      1. Of course, humans are selfish and hypocritical, but the issue here is about the in-your-face government by corporate conspiracy that most Westerners refuse to see. It matters when there is a large population of perpetually indoctrinated people who believe in the “independent” media and “democratic” institutions and trust them at face value.

The insistence of this protestor that these people “do their job” is ridiculous. They are doing it. Presenting a false reality and perpetuating a fake western history is their job. Covering up the crimes of a genocidal corporate criminal syndicate. Reinforcing illusions of government that do not exist and making it impossible for people to even understand that they are being systemically murdered and oppressed. The media is at the forefront of social engineering into people’s minds what is normal.

The belief in democracy is the political cult that won’t die. We have never had it not even in antiquity. It’s time to lose hope in democracy and let that theory die. It was never going to work out as theorized, only transform itself into oligarchy.

There are only two options in a complex civilization, monarchy or oligarchy. Monarchies are always official. Oligarchies call themselves democracies or republics. There never was an official oligarchy of X state. Government by conspiracy and deception is the very nature and essence of an oligarchical state since antiquity.

It means painfully confronting and accepting the violent and selfish dark side of humanity as well as its few good sides as nothing more than animal behavior evolved into genetically over millennia and subject to genetic determinism. Determinism takes away our personal agency, once again attacking personal and human exceptionalism.

Feeling unique or special facilitates personal confidence and therefore aids in human competition and reproductive success. Honesty isn’t so useful to the perpetuating of genes or brute competition. Psychopaths and a few other Cluster B personality disorders with grandiose levels of self-worth have an advantage over others in social competition due to increased levels of personal confidence, even if they are ultimately incompetent in the technical sense. Psychopaths also have the major advantage in that they can easily manipulate social reality without conscience and many ordinary people have preconceived thoughts and ideas they prefer to hear repeated to them rather than to hear the truth. Ordinary people also tend to default towards trust and cooperation which also favors said psychopath. The lack of personal insight that psychopaths have doesn’t hold back the success of many, it facilitates it.

Also, those of us born into a particular civilization have a skewed perspective of things. Americans have sometimes been referred to as people with “car brain” because of how hard it is for most of us to conceive of towns and cities with urban planning for pedestrian/bicycle friendly infrastructure and fully developed public transportation systems as opposed to the view that public transport is a kind of welfare system for the poor slapped haphazardly on top of car infrastructure in cities designed exclusively for cars. Not to speak of the god given right to cheap gasoline that we have always lived with and how that manipulates perceptions of reality. For many of us that’s all we have ever known.

The human eats and then runs around looking for the next meal before reaching the ground state or being interred in the ground. Fossil fuels as an adjunct can keep a lot of stuff moving around and maintained, especially technological stuff, but the stuff is always trying to fall back down to its lowest energy state which for a building would be a pile of rubble and for humans would be carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorous, sulfer and some minerals. It’s a constant battle to keep your complex head above the water and the more size and complexity you have the more energy it takes.

The current arrangements keep eight-billion human heads above water, all kinds of domesticated animals, cars, buildings, roads etc. and they’re all constantly trying to fall apart. Some day soon much of it will be left to fall apart because the fossil fuel energy will be depleted. Those that want to maintain their own flows of energy will try to eliminate the competition or at least throttle their consumption. Degrowth will likely come at the tip of a needle and/or hypersonic missile. Two big whoppers being floated now are that vaccines are safe and effective and Russia started the war. What to do with all of those human RNA churned out by the schools when there’s no longer enough energy to keep them working or even transport them to a place of work. Seems it was taken over by the Jewish mob as a front for drug smuggling. What else has been going on in NYC, where Twin Towers and the people inside are destroyed by the Deep State and all of the bullshit seems to begin.

“Interestingly, Vantine’s was purchased in the 20’s by Arnold Rothstein, an early mob drug dealer.

In the mid-1920s, Arnold Rothstein saw illegal drugs as an untapped field, one that could be developed and profited from. The drug traffic was unorganized and there was little competition on the level Rothstein chose to enter. In fact, the only competition at that time was provided by unethical doctors. Rothstein’s plan was to purchase and sell in quantities so large that no one could compete with him. He could regulate supply and demand on an international basis. In 1923, a kilo of heroin, 2.2 pounds, could be purchased for $2,000. It could then be cut and resold for $300,000.

Rothstein’s interest in narcotics was strictly for wholesaling. He would need a network to sell the drugs and the rum running and bootlegging market already in existence would serve as his pipeline. Lucky Luciano and Waxey Gordon were in place in New York City and New Jersey. The Torrio – Capone Empire was interested in Chicago. Charles “King” Soloman was ready in Boston, as well as Harry “Nig Rosen” Stromberg in Philadelphia. In addition, mobsters in Detroit, Kansas City and St. Louis showed an interest.

Among the buyers Rothstein decided to do business with was Jacob Katzenberg, who was already serving the New York mob as a liquor buyer in Europe.

When Katzenberg teamed up with Rothstein in 1926, they began purchasing from European sources. Rothstein purchased “Vantines,” a well-established importing house in New York City. The importing house had an excellent reputation and was known as a legitimate enterprise. When shipments arrived for them, customs officials gave their merchandise only a cursory search. Vantine’s would become a perfect front for the smuggling operation. Rothstein also owned several art galleries and antique shops that would also serve as fronts.

On November 3, 1928, Arnold Rothstein was shot and mortally wounded in Room 349 at Park Central Hotel, during a creditors meeting where he had went to discuss a game IOU of $390,000. Rothstein had put all of his drug profits back into the business so when he was murdered he had untold millions invested. Upon his death Luciano and Louis “Lepke” Buchalter became the new overlords. Their first order of business was to make Katzenberg their principal buyer in Europe.

Digging up Rothstein’s past to discover clues to his murder, investigators connected Rothstein with all manner of large-scale crockery. Federal agents announced they had certain proof that Rothstein was associated in an international narcotic syndicate with the dead Alfred Loewenstein, the Belgian financier who plunged from his plane into the English Channel. Papers found in Rothstein’s files led to the discovery and seizure, in Grand Central Station of two trunks containing $2,000,000 worth of opium, cocaine, heroin, and morphine.

Same with the current competing western factions and their narratives – old European money, communist and globalist in nature, using AGW as its modus operandi to introduce all manner of digital surveillance, restrictions, and its concomitant but unmentioned degrowth agenda. On the flip side, new American money – capitalist and US-centric, using pursuit of a space-based type 2 civilisation as its foundation myth (Musk, in conversation with Maher recently, stated there are no resource or energy limits apparent at the moment!) with an emphasis on exciting, continued expansion for the younger generations.

So there you have it, the Overton Window is set and the choices defined, and in true ‘Problem-Reaction-Solution’ fashion most people, divided and conquered, will choose one of the fixes on offer; even if only as a lesser of two evils. There are more fossil fuels to burn, but not enough to maintain current metabolism and expand it through growth IMO. The Ponzi can no longer count on lending money and having that capital investment expand the economy overall. Instead we’ll get money creation and an equal or greater amount of inflation as a result. They’ve fiddled with the inflation calculations so buyers figure they’re getting a real positive return on their investment in dollars when in reality dollars are getting watered-down by resource scarcity and over-issuance of debt. We’ll eventually see massive inflation in the cost of energy flows and a matching deflation in the value of dissipative structures, including humans.

The current regime of increasing interest rates is disguised to seem like a response to an overheated economy when it actually is a dampening of demand, like the orchestrated pandemic, to hide the effect of energy decline. Throw in fifteen-minute cities, gas stove ban, no diesel trucks in California, electric cars and other efforts to address “climate change”. They are actually trying to address a decline in energy availability and the likely reduction in purchasing power of the dollar. They’ll also continue to drain the SPR in an effort to keep prices down until that no longer works. The local banks will no longer be needed because there won’t be enough economic activity to make new loans pay-off with interest. There will be rubble as the dead dissipative structures (buildings, factories, homes) begin to deteriorate or are destroyed in the next demand destruction event – war. Those that find their way to a low-energy pod existence with meager rations of energy will probably be the lucky ones.

    2. I knew a guy (he’s dead) who made a shit ton of $ by building and selling the same house design, over and over. He got real good at it. He would take me for a ride in his Corvette and point out subtle differences in the houses to me: “Yeah, see that one. There was a rock in the way, so I had to move the porch over a couple of feet.” That kind of thing.

In his 70’s he spent a shit ton of $ on strippers and assorted young women. He was pretty broke when he died. I think.

I still hang out with his grandson on occasion. I know that he didn’t get anything when the guy died. I vaguely know his son. The last I heard, he was living under a bridge somewhere.

Everything happens exactly as it should, but for no decernable reason. I guess.

      1. It’s hard to save money when you’re a dissipative. Much of the money that has been saved to guarantee basic physiological flows in pensions and bank accounts has already been dissipated. The collateral behind the savings, like commercial real estate, will be the equivalent of old dissipative husks without any value. People don’t know that their savings has been plundered but they’ll find out when they go to spend their savings and the price of things triple or more. But people can find new uses for things left in the debris, like turning shipping containers into homes or living under a bridge. Reminds me of this little guy that makes great use of resilient leftovers.

          1. They all want to improve their lot in life. That’s why my girls spend a half-hour putting on make-up every morning. That’s why chimps spend so much time trying to climb the hierarchy ladder while pushing others off. The fungi have a more egalitarian system as spores are released into wind currents in hope of landing on the mother nutrient load. Everyone has an equal chance in that case. Eventually the muddle is over and it’s time for the next chimp to try their luck with the winds of fortune.

  29. Death, death, death, there’s going to be plenty of that in our future. It’s what happens when there’s not enough energy to run through the dissipatives or some premature damages are inflicted which take people off the dissipative trail (vaxxes, getting shot, diabetes, nuclear war). But those that don’t trust their cabalistic “leaders” have a much better chance of staying alive and reproducing. Some day things might devolve just enough to where we’re human again and not numbered and graded components in an overgrown technological eater.

And here’s something provided by Norman Padgett over at http://www.ourfiniteworld.com It goes along with Kunstler’s “death” essay.

  30. My latest comment on Ugo’s blog:

I’m not sure how anybody can think that global industry can continue in any recognizable form for much longer. How much longer might be a question.

In my view alternative energy sources are not an alternative at all, they simply add to a mix of possible energy sources. This, of course, makes perfect sense when considering the implications of the MPP, etc.

Calling them renewable seems to be blantant propoganda, misinformation. They are replaceable, at best, and then only within the confines of a larger industrial system, powered mostly by fossil fuels.

And, of course, the problem is not an energy problem, per se. It is a resource problem. It can best be understood, on a visceral and mathematical basis, by considering the Law of the Minimum.

Will industry die? Of course. The system that may replace it will be based, unavoidably, on solar flows and available resources. It will not include gimmicks like solar arrays and giant wind tubines and such. I’d say.

    1. Good comment. There is definitely going to be a technological extinction event. Information will be lost, human RNA will starve and tech cells will deteriorate. But what else did they expect? Are they stupid? Yes they are. “Let’s wait until collapse is underway and then we can find something else to eat.” That’s like the fox that depletes all the rabbits and then finds that there are only mice remaining. Even though it puts up a valiant effort, the EROEI is too low. And it didn’t help that it spent half its time fighting with other foxes for the limited resources.

I think Ugo got James Schlesinger and Erwin Schrodinger mixed-up. Maybe the cat in the box is both complacent and panicking at the same time, linked to random subatomic events. There’s always the unimaginably complex process of earthly fusion that would allow us to spew toxic waste into the environment for a few more years, but that may be a lost cause as fossil fuels cease to fund the effort.

  31. I guess that this is what Gail Tivberg has been talking about for a long time.

    https://www.zerohedge.com/news/2023-05-07/oil-market-signals-trouble-future-economy

“Despite all of these factors that should be pushing the price of oil higher, the price of oil is actually collapsing. This is because the market is predicting that the demand for energy will crash so low that it will exceed our limited supply, causing prices to collapse.”

I’m not sure that I understand the logic behind this paragraph. The price of oil will collapse because of a “market prediction”? I have to think, what’s the basis of the prediction? The basis of the prediction is the prediction? The more I think about it, the more sense it seems to make. I guess.

    1. I guess that my own guess might be that “the market” is guessing that Euroland won’t be able to afford much oil for much longer, especially if it has to pay in Rubles or Yuan. I guess.

      1. Same for the U.S. where everyone is loaded with debt and interest rates are still rising. We won’t even notice that oil is declining by 3-6% a year because the government will crush the metabolism by that amount or more every year. But glut will turn into scarcity again before the next hammer on consumption must fall. Another pandemic? An EMP would do the trick in a big way.
